Faculty

Faculty members from Alliance universities meet quarterly to guide selection, development, and assessment of shared homeland security courses. Each university approves the Alliance courses following its own procedures before courses become available to its students.

Student Learning Outcomes for all Alliance courses have been determined by the Faculty Team:

  1. Define and identify vulnerabilities, threats, and hazards
  2. Assess risk
  3. Plan for emergency action
  4. Formulate prevention and mitigation strategies
  5. Organize responses
  6. Manage recovery operations
  7. Evaluate effectiveness

Thanks to the HECA grants, the Alliance is able to fund development of online homeland security courses by faculty and technical support teams in the member institutions. Recognizing the importance of sharing courses notable for excellence, the Alliance Faculty Team has developed two instruments for assuring quality.

  1. Each online course developed with Alliance funds will be evaluated using a rubric developed by Alliance members. The course will not be offered to Alliance students until it meets the quality standards of the rubric
  2. An assessment rubric will be applied to all Alliance courses to determine whether students will acquire the knowledge and skills needed to meet the Alliance Student Learning Outcomes.

In 2008-9, the faculty team will begin consideration of shared homeland security certificate and degree options for the Alliance.

During this pilot year, all course materials are available at no charge for use by faculty in Illinois public universities.  For access to the entire course, contact Mary Mickey at IllinoisIDEAHS@niu.edu or call her at 815-753-1274.
